Ntulya is located in the Sukuma region of northwestern Tanzania near Lake Victoria, four hours west of the Serengeti National Reserve. Nyumbani Shilinde, a well-known Sukuma practitioner, founded the village in 1968 as a healing center. Today, people from all over East Africa come to Ntulya to be healed by traditional practices and to study traditional medicine. Since 1961, Tanzania has been an independent democracy and has continued on a peaceful path, despite being surrounded by countries in turmoil. Literacy and education are national priorities. Tanzania, however, is one of the world’s poorest countries with a per capita income of only $340. Limited economic resources have made it difficult to spread education into the more remote regions. The vast majority of the population is rurally based and dependent on agriculture. Through generous donations and fundraising, Africa Schoolhouse will build a primary school with 15 classrooms, teacher housing, a kitchen, and a medical dispensary. The government of Tanzania has committed to providing teachers and administrators as soon as the building is completed. Africa Schoolhouse will maintain the quality level of education through closely monitored teacher training and curriculum development. Africa Schoolhouse will create a learning environment that can stimulate the long-term productivity and health of the community by using locally produced construction materials combined with modern innovations. A machine that makes bricks from mud and cement will not only build the school, but will also provide significant income for the village. A simple water pump will supply the school with water, and also create a vital source of irrigation for local farmers during the long dry season. The installation of solar panels will create a new world of opportunity where there has never been power before. Electricity offers light after dark and a means to learn and connect with the rest of the world by tapping into the endless resources of the internet. |
